Grilled Rice Cake with Cheese
Yaki Mochi

Mochi, or more politely o'mochi, are the most important item for New Year's feast. They are made by pounding steamed glutinous rice in a wooden mortar and then forming into cakes, balls and other shapes, in varying sizes. In the past mochi pounders, pulling a cart with a huge wooden mortar and pestle, called house to house every December. Nowadays various types of ready-made mochi are easily obtainable all year round, the most common being oblong pieces, about 3 x 5 cm / 11/4 x 2 in and 1 cm / 1/2 in thick, individually vacuum wrapped.
