Allemansrätt
Allemansrätt, the right of access to private land, is enshrined in Sweden's constitutional law, but in fact is not a law as such. It gives everyone the basic right to move freely over open land, with some conditions. It is designed to prevent people from fencing off forest, land or coast to prevent others from enjoying it. There are rules for what you may and may not do (like putting up a tent, or starting a camp fire in restricted areas), and what you can pick, but in general it offers an amazing opportunity for everyone to enjoy the glories of Swedish nature. You can almost call allemansrätt our cultural heritage, and it is thank to its existence that Swedish 'picking' culture has survived: we can pick mushrooms or berries in any wood we like, and in the summer and autumn we Swedes head out en masse, armed with berrying baskets and mushroom knives.
