The Maya - Creation Myth

With good thus triumphing over evil, the Earth was now ready for the creation of human beings.

Xbalanque and Hunahpu emerged from Xibalba - the mouth of the cave in the shape of a serpent - as the sun and moon, gift to the Maya. Each day as these celestial bodies rise and set, the brothers reenact their journey to the underworld and their joyful return.
