Eloquently describing the kindness of the Vietnamese toward those with disabilities, Chisato explained that in contrast, the physically handicapped are accepted in society and working life in Vietnam. Visitors will notice older wheelchair "cowboys" around town in their push cars - going to work or selling lottery tickets from a kind of combination tricycle / wheelchair that is used even in traffic. There are also three-wheeled motorcycles or rather precarious-looking motorcycles with side wheels. Whether these people are older and injured during war or young and were injured in motorcycle accidents, they are a regular part of daily life.

In Chisato's experience, many are willing to help people in wheel-chairs without even being asked. And though most places in Vietnam are not handicap-accessible, she told me that when she arrives for shopping with her friend who is in a wheelchair, people don't wait to be asked to help, or even ask if they can help, for that matter ... they just pick her friend up, chair and all, and carry him up the stairs. In these situations, "the feeling of Vietnamese people is barrier-free", she said, adding her hope that Sakura will help to usher in the same sense of openness toward the intellectually handicapped.
