Party time
The summer solstice has been celebrated for thousand of years, and it is known that our ancestors arranged festivities to honour the longest day of the year. The Christian Church then linked the celebration of Midsummer with a Christian holiday then, in the fourth century, the 24th of June was named as the Feast of St John the Baptist (in Luke it's said that John the Baptist was born six months before Jesus). Ever since, the church in Sweden has fought a losing battle to ensure the celebrations are Christian rather than heathen. At a Swedish Midsummer celebration we dance around a leafy maypole, and eat pickled herring and new potatoes followed by the first strawberries of the season. Schnapps is another must. As of 1954, Swedish Midsummer is celebrated on the Friday between 19 and 25 June, and so not always on the day of the actual summer solstice.
